Version 1.6 now available!

After struggling to find a solution to the problem of unwieldy tag clouds, I created a WordPress plugin to display my tags as a dropdown list. You can see it in action in the sidebar at http://disparate.info/.

Version 1.6 of the Tag Dropdown Widget includes:

  • Ability to specify label shown above tag dropdown;
  • Ability to trim long tag names to fit within sidebar;
  • Ability to display post counts;
  • Ability to exclude specific tags;
  • Ability to trim long tag names, display post counts, and exclude specific tags when using the direct-implementation function in themes that don’t support widgets;
  • Compatibility with earlier versions of WordPress.

The function powering the Tag Dropdown Widget can also be called using the <?php if(function_exists(TDW_direct)) {TDW_direct("limit", "count", "excluded_tags");} ?> command for use outside of the sidebar or in a theme that does not utilize a widgetized sidebar.

Compatibility

Tag Dropdown Widget v1.6 is compatible with WordPress 2.3 and higher.

    The tag dropdown is a brilliant widget! Is it possible to exclude certain tags (as it is with the page dropdown)?

    As of version 1.4, specific tags can be excluded. Thanks for the suggestion.

    Thanks again… have you thought of permitting hierarchical display and post counts? I hate asking a gratuitous follow up, but what the heck, let's press luck…

    I'll work on adding a post counts option and providing options for what's displayed when tag names are cut off.

    As WordPress doesn't currently support nested tags, I don't know that there's a way to show tags hierarchically, but I'll look into it.

    Thanks for your continued feedback.

    Hi,
    Is it possible to display only some tags in drop down and all (non specify) to exlude? (I have lots of tags, and want to specify about 20-30 tags). It's a hard work to exlude lots of tags (about 1000) to show just 20-30 tags.

    Ivan,
    It is not currently possible to specify certain tags to include in the dropdown, but I will explore this option for a future release.

    Thanks for your feedback,
    Erick

    Hey thanks for a good plugin.

    My theme does not support widgets, how do i add post count into the <?php if(function_exists(makeTagDropdown("x") ) {makeTagDropdown("x")} ?> code?
    :)

    Tor,
    Currently, you cannot display the post count via the function. This option will be available in a forthcoming version that should be released by mid-March.

    Tor,
    In the next few days, I will release version 1.6 of the Tag Dropdown Widget. This minor update provides a new function (for backwards-compatibility reasons) that lets users display post counts, trim long tags, and exclude certain tags. Keep an eye on the development blog and plugin repository as this update includes the features you've requested.

    To anyone else who has requested features I've yet to implement, please know that I am working on updates that will implement the requests. My schedule has been particularly hectic this month, making more-than-minor updates difficult to implement.

    Currently, I am working on an update that will provide all of the requested features except one: hierarchical tags. Until WordPress supports hierarchical tags natively, such a feature is exceedingly difficult to implement.

    Thank you lots for an awesome widget, Erik. Really appreciate your generosity in sharing. Hee hee, it did take an awful long time though for a technically challenged blogger like me to finally add one to our site's sidebar.

    I've just upgraded to version 1.6 and was a breeze! Everything is just perfect…no more XHTML validation errors and I'm absolutely delighted with the result! Thank you so much, Erick and God bless you!!

    Thanks for the awesome plugin! I would very much like to see the following function added to the plugin in the future, if it's at all possible: showing posts with the selected tag only from a certain category. So that we can add a widget that searches only for posts with the tag "Thriller" in the category "Movies", and not also from the categories "Television" and "Books".

    Eric,
    Thank you for your feedback. I will explore the feasibility of the feature you requested and add a followup comment to your inquiry with any information I find.
